Don & Arlene Steinwand
Last Updated 09/03/2007
Donald Steinwand was born in 1923 [I think]. He died on November 22, 1969, at age 46 [massive brain hemmorage]. Don was born in or near Jamestown, ND. He was one of eight children ,including Jim, Ray, Margaret, Irene, Mary, Lillian and Laura. Don's father, Frank, farmed and worked for the railroad. He died somewhere around 1946-47. His mother was named Maud. I believe that Don left school after the eighth grade. He apparently lied about his age to enlist in the Navy [1938?] where he remained for eight years. After a year or two break, he joined the Army. Don fought in 3 wars [Germany, Japan, and Korea]. He received a field commission in Korea [I think]. He retired from the army with 22 years of service in 1961 as a Captain. After trying several jobs, including selling insurance, managing a Howard Johnson restaurant, and owning a home construction company with his brother Ray, Don went to work as a hydraulics expert as a civilian working for the Navy. The partial poem you saw on the prior page contained the phrase "Home is the sailor, home from the sea and the hunter home from the hill" which Don told me he would like on his tombstone. Don is buried at the Army cemetery at Ft. Knox, Kentucky. He was survived by wife Arlene, son Gregg, and daughter Dawn [Fran].
Dawn was killed when her car was broadsided by a train in Dayton, Ohio in 1979. She was 32 years old and was survived by son Donald and daughter Michele. Michele met a similar fate as her mother on July 29, 2002 when she was killed in a head-on collision in Kentucky.
Arlene lives in Sheperdsville, Ky. She took Dawn's children and raised them as a second family.
Gregg lives in Roseburg, Or. with wife Laura and dogs Chelsea and Tori!
