Junior Spotlight

Adrienne Powell

June 2018

I will be graduating from Roseburg High School this June and plan on attending Pacific University in the fall. I am looking to pursue a major in Biology with a minor in either Math or Spanish and later go into the medical field to become a Dermatologist. I will be competing for the NCAA Division III women’s tennis team at Pacific University next year.

Throughout my high school career, I have participated in basketball as well as varsity cross country, swimming, and tennis. I started playing tennis ten years ago, and it is still one of my favorite hobbies. Aside from tennis, some of my other past times include hiking, biking, and spending time with my friends and family. I started playing tennis when I was 8, but it was only recently that I started focusing solely on this sport and playing more competitively.

In the past, I have played singles for the Roseburg High team. I placed second in districts my sophomore and junior year and won my first match at state both years. However, this year I decided to play doubles instead. I found that I really enjoy doubles. It has greatly improved my game this season, and I never knew there was so much more to doubles until I started focusing on it. I love the amount of energy and strategy that separates doubles from singles. My partner Jayda Pieske and I had a wonderful season. We were undefeated throughout the entire high school season and took first this year at districts. Not only did we take first, but our team won the district championship as well, and we were able to bring 8 girls to state. I am really proud of the team’s improvement this year and cannot wait to see how they do in the future! Jayda and I were seeded 5th at state, and I am very proud that we were able to compete with the teams we played there. I am excited to be able to compete at the college level next year and see how much I can improve.

Lauren Sandfort

May 2018

My name is Lauren Sandfort. I am a freshman at Roseburg High School. I have been playing tennis since I was three, but I’ve been playing competitively since I was eight.

Spring tends to be a very busy season for me since I am playing both tennis and golf at the same time. I’ve played all different kinds of sports since I was little. I decided to be more focused on tennis and golf this last fall. I love being around the amazing people I play tennis with. It makes the sport even more fun. What I love most is the movement it allows me to do. I strive for working hard physically for something. Golf makes me think more mentally which comes in great, when trying to strategize on the court.

Playing two sports at once does make it difficult to keep up with my studies. I stay up late most nights trying to finish lessons I’ve missed, after a tennis or golf match.

The support I am given from my teachers, coaches, friends and family makes it all more worthwhile. I look forward to being able to play these sports when I’m old and wrinkly!

Massimo (Max) Falleni

April 2018

I'm Massimo Falleni but everyone calls me Max.  I'm 11 years old and I am in the 6th grade at Freemont.  I love tennis but I also play soccer, basketball and the saxophone.

I started playing tennis when I was 6 years old.  We moved to Roseburg when I was 8 and I've been playing at UVTC since.  I love playing with my 2 brothers, Davide & Leo and especially my Dad, Marcello.  I even convinced my Mom to start playing so our whole family can play together.

I love all sports and learning new things but tennis will the sport I play until I'm 101.

Cade Downie

March 2018

Hi! My name is Cade Downie and I am in the 3rd grade. I have been playing tennis since I was 5, but for the last 2 years, have been playing more often. I have played in a couple tournaments and am working on improving my consistency. I love tennis because I can play with my friends and my family. My mom, dad, sister, cousin, Nana and Papa all play tennis which makes it fun because I can go out and play whenever I want. I also love watching the older kids at the courts play, sometimes they even hit with me.

Outside of tennis, I like to play baseball, drive my 4-wheeler, and have Nerf gun fights. I also like to visit my family in Eastern Oregon where we get to ride horses and move cattle.

I’m excited to get better in tennis and am thankful that I am able to play.

Elias Malak

February 2018

Hi, my name is Elias Malak. I have been playing tennis for about 7 years now. I first got involved in tennis during a school field trip and from there I started practicing and practicing and got to where I am today. I enjoy playing tennis a lot. I would like to be like Roger Federer someday so I practice regularly and always try my best to advance my game so I can reach that goal someday. I would like to go to USPTA (United States Professional Tennis Association) and possibly if I can WTA (World Tennis Association).

I love tennis, but I also have other interests. A big interest that I have is technology. I am currently in a robotics team. We work to design and build a robot that must be completely made up of Lego pieces. You are asked to use your robot to accomplish missions. Some are harder than others and every year they change. This year the theme is Hydro Dynamics which is basically water. Other than the robotics part you must find a solution to a real-world problem. We recently had our regional robotics tournament. We felt that we did good and when they started announcing names, my team and I were all feeling discouraged because we were not being announced and then the moment I have been waiting for happened, we came in 1st Place!!! We even got 2 trophies, one for being the regional champions and one for moving on to state. I couldn’t believe my dreams were becoming a reality. We are now getting prepared for state hopefully accomplishing more missions and making our solution for a real-world problem even better. We all want to move on to nationals badly. We are going to try so hard.

I am always busy whether I am playing my sports and instruments or coding and when I have the opportunity I like to act. I love to code and no it is not dragging boxes. When I code, I type commands written in computer coding language. There are about 300 coding languages although I only know 3 of the 300.  JavaScript, HTML (otherwise known as Hyper Text Markup Language), and Python. I code to alter programs or create new games. This is the technology part of me again.

I play the violin as part of the Douglas County Youth Orchestra (DCYO). I have played the violin for 3 years now practicing classical music as well as songs from movies. I am also learning how to play the piano.

I have been in 2 UCC plays Fiddler on The Roof and Oliver Twist. I love getting in to plays when I have the opportunity.

My future goal is to go in to medical school and become a physician. Why you may ask? Well the answer is very simple, because I have been interested in DNA since I was 5.

Ethan Smith

January 2018

My name is Ethan smith. I´m a junior in high school at Baker Web Academy. Baker Web Academy is a virtual school that I have attended online at home now for two years. I've been playing competitive tennis for a while now and looking forward to my third year of high school tennis this spring. Tennis has always been a big part of my life. My grandpa put a racquet in my hand when I learned how to walk and had me on the court when I was two. I've played many other sports than tennis. I've played football, soccer, Karate, baseball, basketball, fencing, and wrestling. Tennis, Karate, and baseball were my three main sports that I played until 8th grade.

Things I like to do off the court are hanging out with my friends, spending time with my family, playing with my dog Izzy, traveling, and meeting new people. One thing I love about tennis is the result of playing the game either if you win or lose because it shows you what you need to work on.

I have appreciated the growth of what I have accomplished and very thankful for the coaching staff I have and very thankful for a supportive family.

Krissy Wattman

December 2017

My name is Krissy Wattman and I am an 8th grader at Fremont Middle School. I have been playing tennis for almost 4 years and I love it! One of my favorite things about tennis is that I can play with my little sister Kami and we can either compete against each other as singles or play together as a doubles team. I feel like tennis has taught me how to be a team player and win or lose, I always take away something valuable to help me grow either physically or mentally.

Other than tennis, I enjoy spending time with my Mom, Dad and Sister, hanging out with friends, drawing (particularly fashion design), choir and just recently I have started taking classes to learn sign language and hope to be fluent in signing one day.

My life is full of blessings and for that I am very grateful and thankful.

Alex Hoddle

November 2017

Hi! I'm Alex Hoddle, I am in the 2nd grade at Cobb school. I first played tennis 4 years ago when our school came for lessons. I've been playing regularly for a year and a half. I love it!! I recently played in my first tournament and I can't wait to play in more. My dad, mom and little sister Olivia all play tennis now so that we can play together as a family. Nadal is my favorite tennis player, I really like to watch him and learn about his accomplishments. I really want my parents to take me to New York so that I can watch the US Open.

I love math, legos and playing most sports. I play soccer, baseball,
wrestling, and basketball to name a few. I want to play football but my mom says no. I also love the Beavers, even though they don't have a tennis team.

Addison Roberts

September 2017

Hi, my name is Addison Roberts. I will be attending 5th grade at Geneva Academy in Roseburg. I have been playing tennis ever since I was 5. The history in my family for tennis all starts with my great grandparents, Lauren and Dena Young, and if it wasn't for them I probably wouldn't want to play tennis.  I am pushing forward into my future in tennis and I'm excited where it will take me. Tennis is fun and I plan to play as long as I live.

I also love riding horses. I've been riding horses since I was 2 years old.

Both riding horses and playing tennis are my favorite sports.

See you on the courts!!

Stephanie Early

August 2017

Hi, I'm Stephanie Early and the love of my life is to play tennis, well now anyway!  I've been playing all year round since I was 12 or 13 yrs old.  Before that I shared it with soccer which I started out playing all year round in 3rd grade.  My first taste of tennis was during Cobb School PE in the 3rd grade & Jeremy Root taught me to play left handed.  It's all his fault... ha ha!  I really like playing tournaments out of town, so my parents take me to 1-2 each month somewhere.  I played in Yakima, Wa., earlier this summer at the PNW sectionals tournament & a few since then.

When I'm not playing tennis, I volunteer at Cobb School on days that I don't have class at RHS, where I'll be a sophomore this year.  I experienced my first year of running cross country last fall, since we didn't have it at Cobb.  I liked it, so will do it again.  It's been one of my goals since playing tennis year round to hopefully receive a scholarship to one of Oregon's smaller colleges or even for cross country.

I volunteer at St Joseph's Community Kitchen with my dad during the week & sometimes at UCAN warehouse.  I'm a active member of St Joseph's Youth Group & a few weeks ago, spend 5 days at St Martin's University in Olympia, WA., at a youth conference.  It was my 2nd summer doing the conference, loved it!

My summers aren't all fun & games, I have school studies almost everyday as a refreshers course, so I won't forget.  I like to read, play video games, listen to Christian rock music & hang out or snap chat with my friends.  Oh, and I love spending time RV'ing with my parents, relatives & friends.

Samantha Eichman

July 2017

Hi, I'm Samantha Eichman and I've been playing tennis since I was super little. I'm a sophomore at RHS and very recently I competed in Yakima, Washington for the PNW sectionals. Through tennis I have made wonderful friends in different areas and gotten many opportunities to travel around Oregon and sometimes other states that I would not have received otherwise.

Outside of tennis I like to watch Netflix, hike, read, hang out with my friends, and take Polaroids. One of my goals for my tennis career is to try and receive a college scholarship. I'm really really exited for my future and hope to play tennis until I'm 90.:)

Ally Sandfort

June 2017

My name is Ally Sandfort and I am a 16 year old sophomore who attends Roseburg Highschool. I've been playing tennis since I was 4 and I've been playing golf since I was 6 years old. In my freshman year I attended the state tournament for golf. My sophomore year I participated in the state golf and tennis tournaments. I took second team All Conference for golf and tied for 42 place shooting a 92,94. My doubles partner and I were undefeated in conference play and then took second at the district tournament. I have a 4.0 gpa and would like to play golf at the collegiate level.

Lucas Ball

May 2017

My name is Lucas and I’m a huge computer geek. My whole life I’ve been obsessed with computers, and I learned all about them online too. I’ve built computers, coded computers and played on computers. I’ve been very school involved as I am the tech guy in the leadership class at the high school, so I help conduct all of the events at the school.

Some of my other interests include water sports. I’ve surfed and body boarded, but I enjoy kite surfing the most. I also play tennis along with my entire family. I currently play tennis for Roseburg High School and have enjoyed junior trips with UVTC.  I’ve had a few accomplishments throughout my tennis career including placing 3rd at the state championships for high school my junior year, and winning the consolation draw of the same tournament my freshman year.

I mostly try to work hard every day, so I can get better and accomplish my next goal.

Spring Break 2017

April 2017

Some of our UVTC juniors were able to go on the annual Spring Break Trip to NorCal that Len does every year. They were able to play some great tennis, go to Six Flags, watch a college match, visit the Jelly Belly factory, act the tourist in San Francisco, stay with some amazing host families and make some new friends along the way. Pretty incredible way to spend Spring Break!

Brian Powell

March 2017

I am a seventh grader who values getting the most I can out of my time. My week is pretty busy with the sports, clubs, and other activities I do.

My robotics team and I are going to the state competition having won districts. Mathcounts is a sport of understanding math and how to use it, I am on this team and attend the weekly lessons in which I learn anything from probability to modulars. These are my sports that are focused more on using  the brain.

Athletic sports that I play include track, and cross country. Both of these sports are centered towards running and focusing. This means you also  have to control your brain and not give up or slow down.

I play three instruments including violin, piano, and tenor saxophone, so I have to practice at least once a day. It takes a lot of time and effort into  these activities, and I definitely would be the person who would know.

I am in the school newspaper class, or journalism, as we like to call it. I love computer programming, and, no it is not the basics. This is complicated  programming, I have written up to 1500 lines of computer programs to make a binary to text converter program. This programming is more complicated  than it looks, way more complicated. It takes years to learn it. I love experimenting with electricity, like for instance, I made a button that is wired to a  small fan, which will spin and hit a magnet which is tied to a light switch and will have enough force to shut off my lights if I press a button from my  bed. This took hours to make, not to mention I came up with the idea all by myself and I had to come up with a way for my not very powerful fan to turn off the lights to work. This stuff interests me like another student might be interested in trading cards or something like that. Anyways read my  sports schedule below.

Here is my schedule of activities: Mondays: Robotics from right after school to 4:00 or a little later. Tuesdays: mathcounts starting after school and then piano after that. Wednesdays: Tennis, from 3:00 to 4:30. Thursdays: Robotics from after school to 4:00 then violin lessons. And Fridays I have tennis. I play saxophone in the school band.

I wish I could have more time to do all these! It would be great to have tennis more than twice a week and same thing with robotics and Mathcounts.
