Improvement project: outdoor tennis & pickleball court renovation

In 2019, the UVTC Board of Directors commissioned Cameron McCarthy to design a Master Plan with the goal of bringing improvements to the Tennis Center and Stewart Park that will benefit the residents of Douglas County for generations.

The driving factor behind the Master Plan is the current condition of the outdoor tennis courts. With the original six outdoor courts constructed 1959 and then an additional six built in 1970, they have played well past the life expectancy of a well-maintained tennis court. Considering all factors, it was determined that rebuilding the courts would be the best long-term solution.

Along with improvements to the outdoor courts, the plan includes:

  • New outdoor pickleball courts.

  • ADA public restrooms.

  • Relocate and rebuild the outdoor basketball courts.

  • Updates to the Hoffman Center.

  • Future indoor tennis courts and/or pickleball courts.

  • Outdoor storage for tennis equipment.

In late 2022 and in partnership with the City of Roseburg, UVTC began gathering cost estimates and budgeting for Phase 1 of the Master Plan. Through grants and private donations, the goal is to begin Phase 1 in the Spring of 2024.

Note: since the video was created, an indoor court was converted to 4 pickleball courts. UVTC now consists of: 11 outdoor & 5 indoor tennis courts, 4 indoor pickleball courts.

FAQs

  • Not only tennis and pickleball players, but the entire community benefits! UVTC regularly hosts events throughout the year which bring large numbers of players to the area who then patronize the area hotels, restaurants, wineries and other businesses. The following groups and organizations are also directly impacted:

Roseburg High School: The boys & girls high school tennis teams practice and compete at the UVTC courts.

OSAA: UVTC regularly hosts state and district tournaments for Oregon’s 4A, 5A & 6A schools.

Boys & Girls Club of the Umpqua Valley: UVTC provides free summer tennis lessons.

    Kids!

    • UVTC provides low-cost tennis lessons to area schools to fulfill physical education requirements for youth.

    • Provides scholarship opportunities for kids to participate in junior tennis lessons and assistance with equipment.

    • Free tennis clinics are given each summer to juniors who are new to tennis.

  • The City owns the land and facilities that encompass Umpqua Valley Tennis Center. On behalf of UVTC, the City is applying for grants through the Local Government Grant Program funded by the Oregon State Lottery. Any funds received from the LGGP program must accompany a 40% match. The City is requesting $750,000 - half of the estimated cost of the project.

  • Pickleball, often described as a combination of tennis, Ping-Pong and badminton, just happens to be the fastest growing sport in America the last few years. Currently, the City of Roseburg does not have any dedicated pickleball courts.

Pickleball is a very social game that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and of all skill levels. It’s the perfect way to meet new friends and have some fun.

A single tennis court can be converted into four pickleball courts! That means a higher number of players per surface area which allows more revenue potential for clinics and tournaments. With UVTC’s ability to host large multi-day tournaments, players travel to Roseburg and then patronize our local businesses.

  • UVTC is a 501(c)(3) - financial contributions are tax deductible and any amount is graciously welcomed.

For more information about the renovation project or fundraising campaign, contact T.J. Cameron or Eric Ball.

  • Beginning with the original six outdoor courts 64 years ago, the entire tennis complex has been constructed almost entirely through private donations through fundraising.

A $1.6 million effort allowed UVTC to add three more indoor courts in 2014 along with offices, locker rooms and a viewing area that gave the Roseburg community one of the finest indoor tennis facilities on the west coast.

Most recently in 2022, a $25,000 donation allowed UVTC to convert a single indoor tennis court into four pickleball courts - allowing UVTC to accommodate one of the fastest growing sports in America.
